Plan for a repair, not a breakdown. Your car (and your wallet) will thank you.

Owning a car can become stressful and costly if advised repairs are left until parts fail, rather than replacing them before a breakdown occurs.
No one wants to be left stranded on the side of the road for hours waiting for recovery. It’s always better to plan ahead for a repair rather than waiting for a part to fail. At Barrett-Lee, we’ll always do our best to find a convenient time to get your car booked in and repaired.

Diagnostic testing and investigation

At Barrett-Lee, we’ve continually developed our diagnostic capabilities over the years. With the latest, up to date diagnostic tools, combined with our extensive knowledge and daily hands on experience we’re equipped to solve even the most complex issues. No two faults are ever the same, but when you choose Barrett-Lee, you can be confident you’re in safe hands.

Working alongside our trusted partners, Autologic and Bosch, we’re able to provide expert diagnostic and repair solutions locally and efficiently.

We charge a fixed rate for an initial diagnostic code read. This process begins by connecting our equipment to your vehicle, communicating with its systems, and recording the fault memory. We then clear the stored faults to determine whether any are sporadic or permanent.

A short road test is carried out and in many cases, the faults do not return, if the fault reappears several miles later, further investigation will be required, which would be discussed with you in advance and charged at an additional cost.

Broken spring

Look what can happen during a simple trip to the shops. This customer drove through a pothole and soon noticed a rattling noise coming from the driver’s side front wheel area. On inspection, one of our technicians found a broken spring. The spring was removed, replaced, and the car was quickly back on the road.

This is just one of many vehicles we repair and return to customers in safe, roadworthy condition every day. Springs break, tyres bulge, brakes bind, the list goes on.

Why wouldn’t you let Barrett-Lee’s team of technicians help keep you safely on the road?

Customer Feedback and Reviews

At Barrett-Lee, we’re proud to be a well-established service centre with a loyal customer base. However, we are always striving to improve and stay ahead by looking to the future.

Customer reviews and feedback play a vital role in helping us monitor our performance and maintain the high standards we set. They also give potential new customers the opportunity to see genuine experiences from those who already trust us with their vehicles.

Diagnostic testing at Barrett-Lee

Modern vehicles are equipped with complex electronic systems, and when a fault occurs, diagnostic testing is the first step to identifying the issue. This involves connecting specialist diagnostic equipment to your car’s onboard computer, which allows us to communicate with the system and read any stored fault codes.

It’s important to note that a fault code doesn’t always identify the exact problem it highlights the area of concern, guiding further investigation. While there are many generic code readers available on the market, these can sometimes provide incorrect codes or misleading descriptions.

At Barrett-Lee, we use industry-leading Autologic and Bosch diagnostic equipment. We also work closely with their technical departments to ensure accurate interpretation of codes and effective fault-finding.

In some cases, a warning light and its fault code may clear if the issue is not permanent, and the car may appear to drive normally again. However, even if the light goes out, the error is still stored in the vehicle’s memory. This is why it’s important to have any warning light, past or present properly investigated.

If your engine warning light has been on, even if it has since gone off, we recommend contacting us by phone or email to arrange a diagnostic check.

Timing belts at Barrett-Lee

The timing belt plays a crucial role in keeping the mechanical components of your engine perfectly synchronized. While failures are relatively rare, when they do occur, the consequences can be catastrophic—often leading to severe engine damage and costly repairs.

To prevent this, manufacturers provide recommended replacement intervals for timing belts, which vary depending on the make, model, and engine type.

If you’re unsure when your car’s timing belt is due for replacement, please call or email Barrett-Lee and we’ll be happy to confirm the correct interval for your vehicle.

Brakes, Clutches & batteries at Barrett-Lee

Brakes
Efficient brakes are essential for road safety. Signs such as sponginess in the brake pedal, unusual grinding or grating noises, or excessive/insufficient pedal travel should always be checked without delay.

Clutches
While some clutches can last for very high mileages, all will eventually wear out. Common warning signs include clutch slip (engine revs rising without acceleration) or juddering when pulling away. If you notice these symptoms, it’s important to have the clutch inspected as soon as possible.

Batteries
Modern vehicles require the correct type of battery to ensure all electrical systems function properly. Many are linked to battery monitoring systems, meaning they often need coding to the vehicle after replacement. This allows features such as stop/start technology and smart charging systems to work at their optimum level. If you suspect your battery is failing, we can carry out a full battery test and recharge if required.

To arrange checks or repairs for your brakes, clutch, or battery, please call or email Barrett-Lee to book an appointment.

Tyres at Barrett-Lee

The tyre market is extremely competitive, with a wide range of options available to suit different vehicles and driving needs. At Barrett-Lee, we don’t hold tyres in stock, but we work closely with two well known and trusted suppliers. This allows us to order and fit the exact tyres you need, usually with quick turnaround, subject to availability.

TYRES & FUEL CONSUMPTION

On average, 20% of a car’s fuel consumption (or one tank in five) is consumed by ‘rolling resistance’. That’s right, tyres are responsible for 20% of a car’s fuel consumption.

You only need to feel how hot tyres get on a fast trip to prove this. Low rolling resistance tyres can mitigate much of this loss especially when an economical style of driving is practised:

Drive at a constant speed, avoiding rapid stops and starts. Anticipate events and other road users actions to maintain a constant speed as much as possible

Change gears between 2,000 to 2,500 RPM in order to keep optimal engine speeds

Check your tyre pressures regularly as under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption. Don’t over inflate tyres to lower resistance as they will wear unevenly and skid easily in poor conditions

Air Conditioning at Barrett-Lee

An inefficient air conditioning system has to work harder to keep your vehicle cool, which can cause components to overwork and potentially fail prematurely. Sometimes the issue may only require a simple recharge, but it’s always worth having the system checked and investigated to prevent further problems.

Exhausts & Catalytic Convertors at Barrett-Lee

At Barrett-Lee, we can supply and fit exhaust systems for almost all makes and models. Where possible, we will always advise if only a specific section of the exhaust needs replacing, ensuring a cost-effective repair.

Most exhaust parts are readily available, though supply is subject to availability from our trusted suppliers.

Engine Oils at Barrett-Lee

Engine Oil: Essential for Performance and Protection

Maintaining the correct amount and grade of engine oil is vital for your vehicle’s performance and longevity. Proper engine lubrication helps reduce wear on moving parts, prevent overheating, and avoid unnecessary damage. Regular oil changes also offer additional benefits, including: Reducing emissions by keeping the engine running efficiently, Improving fuel efficiency through smoother operation, Preventing costly repairs caused by engine wear or damage.

Scheduling routine oil checks and changes is a simple yet effective way to keep your car running at its best.

Drive Belts & Hoses at Barrett-Lee

Regularly checking your vehicle’s belts, radiator, and heater hoses is highly recommended to help prevent unexpected breakdowns. A failing belt can cause significant engine problems, and in the worst-case scenario, lead to costly repairs.

It’s important to note that the condition of belts and hoses is not always visible from a simple visual inspection. In many cases, parts need to be removed for a thorough check to ensure they are functioning correctly and safely.

Routine inspections help catch potential issues early, keeping your car reliable and preventing avoidable damage.
