You may have blinked and missed it but summer will soon be coming to an end and the autumn is nearly upon us.

We will soon be seeing the leaves changing colour and falling from the trees. However, it is not only the seasons that will be changing; we will also see significant changes in driving conditions.

The biggest danger to drivers through the autumn months is dazzle from the low sun which can cause poor visibility. However, there are steps to be taken to ensure safer driving in the autumn.

Firstly, it is essential to make sure your windscreen is clean, inside and out. It is also important to make sure the windscreen is in a good state of repair as scratches and chips can create sun dazzles.

Windscreen wipers and wind screen washer fluids are also important things to remember. Wipers have a maximum lifespan of two years so you need to ensure the wipers on your vehicle are fit for purpose. Effective wipers will clean the screen better, reducing dazzle from the sun. Add a good quality washer fluid to use on your windscreen and you have significantly reduced you chances of being dazzled.

Here are the key points to remember when driver at sunset:

  • Keep your windscreen clean inside and out
  • Renew your wiper blades if worn
  • Make use of the sun visor if necessary
  • Consider purchasing a pair of subscription sunglasses
  • Be aware of other drivers as they will be facing the same dazzle risks as you.
