Air conditioning - are you ready to take the heat?

With the warmer months fast approaching you will soon be reaching for that air conditioning switch in your vehicles.

However, many people will have been neglecting their ‘air con’ systems during the cold spells, and this can have serious consequences. A car air-conditioning system can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and fungus if not maintained; this can be particularly worrying for people with conditions such as asthma.

Despite these issues there is no need for panic and there are some simple steps you can take to ensure your ‘air con’ is ready to use in an effective and safe manner.

It is a good idea to vacuum and clean the system regularly, but it is also worth considering using an anti-bacterial liquid to ensure you are rid of the bacteria.

Also, all systems use a coolant and just like other liquids in your vehicle they need to be regularly topped up and replenished. Every two years is a good general yardstick, but it is best to cheque your vehicle handbook for the most appropriate advice.

It is also advisable to run the system for a few minutes at least once a week, no matter what the temperature may be. Doing this will ensure the hoses, pumps and valves which run throughout the system are kept well lubricated.

Another good piece of advice is to have your ‘air con’ system serviced on an annual basis and better still to have it serviced before the warmer weather arrives. We suggest whenever you have your routine vehicle service that you ask the mechanic to ensure they check the air conditioning system.

Of course if you have any queries about your air conditioning system you are more than welcome to pop in and see us or email us and we will provide you with the best possible advice.
